The music scene is always changing for the best. If you are an 80’s baby like me and grew up in the 90’s, you should remember music artists like Janet Jackson, Missy Elliot, Timberland, Brandy, Monica, SWV, B2k, Immature, Kurtis Blow and others. Those were real artists and groups that sang and made great music. Now, I can take it back a little further and name other artists such as Craig Mack, Roxanne Shante, Adina Howard, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, TLC, Hi-5, Guy, Soul For Real and Minnie Ripperton. As the generations change, so does the music scene. There have been a lot of great artists that have graced our presence with great music that is meaningful, instead of all that mess you can’t understand. I’m pretty sure some of you can understand that. But here are some of the artists and songs that should be on your playlist. Trust me; they are great artists if you haven’t already heard of them before.
Lizzo (“Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell”), as she’s known on the music scene, was born Melissa Jefferson and is from Detroit, Michigan. She now resides in Houston, Texas and has been performing internationally and all over the world. If you don’t have any of her songs on your playlist, you are sleeping on some unique, good music.
Kierra Sheard‘s “Don’t Judge Me” ft. Missy Elliott. She is a fashion designer and a radio host who also happens to be an American gospel singer. I like the type of gospel music where it can be mixed with gospel rap and contemporary gospel.
Saweetie (“My Type” and“Icy”). At first, I didn’t care for a lot of this new rap music from new artists, but I decided to take a chance on listening. I saw this song (“My Type” ) performed for the first time on the BET Hip Hop Awards a couple of weeks ago and I loved every moment of it. Saweetie showed up and showed out! If you enjoy the Hip hop genre, then make sure you have this song and artist in your playlist. This 26-year old American rapper is definitely making her mark in the music industry.
Wale‘s “Expectations” ft. 6 Black, “BGM” and“On Chill” ft. Jeremih. I’ve been rocking with Wale for a long time now and when I first heard “Lotus Flower Bomb” back in 2011, I was hooked! He produces and records original music that flows so deeply that you can understand what he is talking about most of the time. When I first heard his new music, especially “On Chill,” I loved everything about the beat and the lyrics. Jeremih is already a great singer, so adding him on the track resulted in two powerful people doing magnificent things! His new album“Wow…That’s Crazy” is pretty good. I haven’t listened to the whole album in full, but I did download some of his new songs such as “BGM,” which is dedicated to Black Women and“Expectations,” which I first heard during his Breakfast Club Interview one morning while driving to work.
Lil’ Nas X “Old Town Road” ft. Billy Ray Cyrus. OMG!!! Every time this song came on the radio, the beat was fire and I knew it was a country song, but I just couldn’t figure out who the artist was. Until one day, I was on my phone and was downloading some new music for my playlist and I came across this song again. I’ve been rocking this song ever since! If you want some diversity music, make sure you download this song. Lil’ Nas X is a 20-year old rapper from GA and has great taste in beats.
Fat Joe‘s “YES” ft. Cardi B and Anuel AA. I’ve always liked Fat Joe’s music, especially the hit he made with Ashanti called “What’s Luv.” But this new single with Cardi B and Puerto Rican rapper Annuel AA on the mix brings flavor and I’m always down for a song with great collaborations and flavor!
Summer Walker ‘s“Come Thru” ft. Usher is definitely on my repeat list! The song begins with Usher’s “You Make me Wanna” beat and then her lyrics. Usher has been around for a long time and is one of my favorite R&B male artists, with a voice from God! Walker is young in the game, hailing from Atlanta, GA, representing her city. I applaud all the new artists that are up and coming.
Kanye West‘s (“Follow God” and“On God”) newest studio album “Jesus is King” was released on October 25th. Some of his new songs that I have listened to are good and relevant for the most part; definitely a different sound for West.
Daniel Caesar and Brandy‘s“Love Again.” Brandy is a veteran in the R&B music genre and her soft, raspy voice is so unique and beautiful, especially in this duet with Daniel Caesar. I really love this song and the passionate that’s behind it. Go download this song today for your playlist. I promise you won’t regret it!
I hope you have found some of these songs worth your while and worth listening to. I have a variety of old school and new school on my current playlist called “That Riverz Gurl Mixx” and I am constantly listening to it! Whether it’s Hip hop or R&B, make sure that what you are listening to what makes you feel good and puts you in the mood. I know the songs I listen to do! Bronze Beauties, have fun and enjoy yourself and make sure you relax and take time for YOU because YOU do ROCK!
