Pearl Market’s Holiday Extravaganza

by

By Kiara Timo

The city may change but Brooklyn will always be the home of the hustle. On Saturday December 8th, Black Pearl Collective hosted Pearl Market, a unique holiday shopping experience at BKLYN Commons featuring over 20 women-owned brands. Guests could purchase anything from cruelty-free nail polish by LAWBeauty Essentials, high-end sustainable watches from Eco Wrist, artisanal soaps by Love Soaponified, and so much more. From 2pm to 7pm, guests from all over shopped for Christmas gifts for their loved ones and self-indulgent treats. The atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, food and drinks, as guests moved throughout the aisles and engaged in conversation with business owners who spoke glowingly about their entrepreneurial dreams and one-of-a-kindpieces. While there were many wonderful vendors at the event, below is a spotlight on some personal favorites.

Spotlight: Phoebe, a handcrafted jewelry line owned by Lizzie Lahey, provides simple yet elegant pieces which add a touch of soft femininity with every design. Made with brass and 14 carats rose gold, Phoebe includes necklaces, rings, and bracelets. Inspired by Lahey’s desire to provide employment opportunities in Kenya, some of the accessories feature words engraved on them such as “Hakuna Matata,” meaning ‘no worries,’ and “Shukrani,”which means ‘gratitude.’ A portion of all proceeds go to Lahey’s mentee’s, who inspired the name of the jewelry line, college fund.

Spotlight: What’s more endearing than a family business? A family business by sisters who aren’t even teenagers yet. Kayla, 12, started her jewelry line Rok Fuzion two years ago and was driven by her desire to see more earthy and natural pieces, which is why her line features earrings and necklaces resembling the ‘Tree of Life.’ Inspired by her family’s hustle (their mother is an entrepreneur as well), Kayla’s little sister Keira, 9, created a peppermint scented organic lip balm called Lip Fuzion, Together, the two sisters created their own company called Kake28.

Spotlight: Whiskey Stories, owned by Rachna Hukmani, is a Michelin Guide recommended company that provides a whiskey inspired experience including tastings, colognes, foods, and more. Having been in the whiskey business for the past eleven years, Hukmani desired to find a way to create a luxury experience that focused on the alcoholic beverage.

Spotlight: Chateau Hi, an emerging retail store, features products from different small businesses, such as accessories, apparel and skincare, all of which are vetted by the owner, Regina Clarke. Her company, which launched in September 2018, seeks products with a natural and warm aesthetic, which is supported by her company (word) ‘Retailing with A Conscious.’
