Keeping skin protected during the winter months

By Shawn Stuldivant, Editor in Chief

Hey Bronze beauties! Winter is in full blast, which means that we should be taking measures to protect our skin from becoming too dry and flaky from the cold. Proactive skincare shouldn’t just come from the lotions and creams we use to keep our skin moisturized. The products we use to wash our skin with are just as important.

In order to provide you with the most accurate information, I spoke with Dove partner and board-certified, Miami-based dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba in a Q&A session about the effects of cold weather on our skin and how we can keep it protected. Here’s what she had to say.

Q: What happens to skin during the winter months? Why is it so important to protect our skin during this time?

A: During winter, it’s not just coats you need to layer up on! The wind wicks away moisture leading to dryer skin making us more prone to acne, eczema, breakouts and other irritations – which is why it’s important to take the time to care for it! Overall, I would avoid any rough fabrics when opting for heavier clothing as this may lead to inflammation or irritation and over exfoliating which can strip the skin of essential oils. Be gentle when exfoliating and remember that exfoliation and moisturization should always go hand in hand.

Q: What are the best types of products to use to cleanse the skin during the cold weather months?

A: Cold weather can also drastically affect the overall condition of underarm skin due to hotter temperatures during our shower use while also wearing heavy clothing that can irritate the skin. I would use Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant Apple & White Tea which is formulated with Dove ¼ moisturizers and NutriumMoisture to help the skin retain its moisture balance over time while providing a crisp scent that is perfect for Winter.

It is important to continue to be consistent with your skincare routine and continue to cleanse and moisturize your body with products that will hydrate your skin. I recommend using the Dove Instant Foaming Body Wash, the first foaming body wash from Dove. The weightless formula combines Dove’s gentlest cleansers with NutriumMoisture technology to help keep skin hydrated and healthy-looking.

Q: Is Dove Instant Foaming Body Wash safe for children? Why or why not?

A: Yes, it is! With a soft, airy lather for superior care it’s not only the perfect product for children it also makes bath time more fun for the whole family. The sensitive line is unscented and has the brand’s signature ¼ moisturizing cream.

Q: What is the best water temperature for the skin when taking a shower or bath during the cold weather months? Please explain.

A: While hot water feels great in the shower, especially if its cold outside, it actually strips away moisture from the skin and may lead to irritation redness, and extremely dry skin. You should avoid hot water and long showers to avoid drying out the skin. Limit your shower time to under 10 minutes and keep it to Luke-warm temperature.

Q: What effect does cold weather have on acne prone skin?

A: Cold weather leads to dry skin which is more than just annoying and uncomfortable. Dry skin can lead to serious skin problems such as worsening of eczema, psoriasis and can be a major cause of winter itch. Your skin care routine should revolve around trying to preserve your body’s own natural moisturizers. Look for ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, and petrolatum to combat the effects winter has on your skin.
