Hip-Hop icon Grandmaster Flash will be joining the production team for the upcoming Netflix original series “The Get Down.” The 57-year-old legendary DJ will serve as an associate producer and technical adviser for the Baz Luhrmann helmed musical drama. Flash will also be portrayed in the series’ storyline by young newcomer Mamoudou Athie. “The Get Down” is set in New York City during the late 1970’s. Both fictitious characters and real life people will be featured in the plot. “The Get Down” is an epic saga of the NYC music scene and the birth of rap. Other cast members include: Justice Smith (“Ezekiel”), Shameik Moore (“Shaolin Fantastic”), Skylan Brooks (“Ra Ra”), Herizen Guardiola (“Mylene Cruz”) and Tremaine Brown, Jr. (“Boo Boo”). “I can’t tell you just how much joy and great spirit we are getting from working with some of the founding fathers of the form,” Luhrmann said in a statement. “Not only in music, dance and graffiti but the culture of the time in general. The whole team is absolutely thrilled to have Grandmaster Flash on board.” Influential Hip-Hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was formed in the South Bronx of New York City in 1978. Arguably the most pivotal figure in all of Hip-Hop, Grandmaster Flash helped create innovations in the art of DJing that became standards in the world of Rap. The pioneering group released the groundbreaking single “The Message” in 1982, and had the honor of being the first Hip-Hop act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Luhrmann will executive produce alongside Emmy-nominee Shawn Ryan (“The Shield,” “Terriers”). Academy Award winner Catherine Martin (Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” “Moulin Rouge”) will serve as costume and production designer. She joins fellow executive producers Paul Watters (“Australia”), Thomas Kelly (“Copper”), playwright Stephen Adley Guirgis and Marney Hochman (“Terriers”). It is Luhrmann’s first musical-related endeavor since Moulin Rouge. The 13-episode series from Sony Pictures Television will debut in all Netflix territories in 2016.
