Finally breaking grounds: an African Barbie all dolled up in avant-garde fashion. The mastermind behind this creation is designer Byron Lars whom started designing under his own label in 1991. His recent collection is titled “The Fenella Layla Barbie Doll” and combines various styles, fabrics, and shapes with couture in mind. The headpiece is made with a red-plaid fabric reminiscent of Scotland. The bodice is draped in two layers: underneath is a navy-blue and tanned stripped turtle neck and above is a free-flowing leopard top.
A plaid tartan skirt is worn by the doll along with argyle socks slipped into ankle high white boots. To make the outfit more dramatic, the designer finishes the look with a cape lined with contrasting fabrics.
To top it all off, Barbie is rocking an afro and can be seen wearing empowering eye lashes! Growing up, I always wished to own a Barbie of this caliber and applaud Byron Lars for breaking “African Barbie” out of the box. The Fenella Layla doll is on sale for $100; other dolls can purchased at a lesser price. Visit www.barbiecollector.com for more info and to view all dolls in its entirety.
