DIY Hair Treatments

Simply washing your hair every week or every two weeks isn’t enough to maintain healthy hair. Hair treatments push the health of your hair one step further. With so many hair treatments out there, it gets harder to know which one to choose. But sometimes, the best treatments are already in your kitchen. You can make your own hair masks right at home for the care that your hair needs.

  1. For an itchy scalp

To help soothe a flaky scalp, mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of water. Massage this mixture onto a damp scalp, leave in for 20 minutes (you can put on a plastic cap if you wish), then rinse and shampoo hair.  The lemon juice helps get rid of loose dry flakes and the olive oil moisturizes the skin underneath the flakes. This treatment can be applied every two weeks.

  1. For frizzy hair

To reduce frizz, mix one banana, a tablespoon of olive oil and 3 spoonfuls of mayonnaise. Be sure to mash the banana well to avoid chunks of banana getting stuck in your hair. Apply the mixture generously to dry hair while concentrating on the roots; leave in for 30 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair. This mask adds extra moisture and reduces frizziness. This can be applied every two weeks.

  1. To revive scalp and hair

To bring your hair back to life, mix one avocado, about 10 drops of argan oil (you don’t want to add too much oil), 2 tablespoons of honey, and a few drops of tea tree oil (like five or so). Be sure to thoroughly mash the avocado. Massage the mask into your freshly washed scalp, and work it towards your ends, but keep your focus on your scalp; leave it in for 10-15 minutes, then comb through your hair and rinse. This mask helps reduce dandruff, dryness and heat damage. This can be applied every two weeks.

  1. For damaged and dry hair

To help out damaged and dry hair, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, a tablespoon of vinegar, and an egg. Make sure to whip the egg well. Apply this mixture generously to dry hair, put on a plastic cap and leave it in for 15-20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo. This mask provides a great deal of moisture. This can be applied every two weeks.

  1. For extra moisture

To increase the moisture of your hair, mix ¼ cup of honey and ¼ cup of olive oil (or coconut oil). Heat the honey in the microwave for a few seconds to make it warm. Apply mixture to freshly shampooed hair and cover with a plastic cap for 15-30 minutes, then rinse.

  1. To promote hair growth

To promote the growth of your hair, mix ½ cup of coconut milk and ¼ cup of honey. Microwave the honey to make it easier to mix with the milk. Massage the mixture into your scalp for at least 2 minutes to help stimulate blood flow. If you wish, place extras of the mixture to the ends of your hair, and put on a plastic cap. Leave mask on hair for 30 minutes, then rinse and shampoo with cool water. This mask will hydrate, and soften your hair while promoting hair growth. If you have really dry hair, do this treatment once a week.
