DIY Facial Scrubs and Masks

by

When we’re younger we think growing up will lead to clear skin and that we’ll never have to worry about acne again because puberty will be over. Then we grow up and learn that’s not the case; acne can show up at anytime. There are many factors that can affect breakouts, and sometimes your regular cleansers need a little extra help, and natural ingredients can provide that extra help. Here are some simple do-it-yourself facial scrubs/masks that’ll help with your breakouts. These scrubs and masks aren’t to be done daily, but should be done on a regular schedule. You can use them once a week or once every two weeks, depending on the affect they have on your skin. This addition to your routine can make all the difference.

Scrubs

  1. Blackhead Scrub

Combine 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 ½ tablespoons of water into a bowl. Make sure to add the water slowly, making sure the mixture is not runny. Massage the scrub onto your damp skin for about a minute, then rinse with warm water. This scrub should not be used everyday as it can be too harsh for everyday use.

  1. Scrub for Oily Skin

Combine 2 tablespoons of finely ground oatmeal, 1 ½ tablespoons of avocado, and a tablespoon of honey. These ingredients should create a thick paste. Massage the paste in circular motions and rinse with warm water. Since there are no ingredients that can damage your skin in this scrub, you can use it more often than scrubs containing sugar or salt, but it still shouldn’t be used everyday.

  1. Dull Skin Scrub

Combine a tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of honey, a tablespoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of sugar. This mixture will not be very thick. Apply gently to your face in circular motions and rinse with warm water. This scrub will get rid of dirt in your pores and brighten up your skin.

  1. Exfoliating Scrub

Combine 2 tablespoons of salt, the juice from one lemon and add sugar until the mixture is solid but not dry. Gently massage the mixture into your skin, let it sit for about 2 or 3 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This makes for a great exfoliant.

 Masks

  1. Anti Aging Mask

Combine ½ a cup of cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons of oats, 4 tablespoons of coconut cream, 4 tablespoons of avocado and ¼ cup of honey. This mixture goes on smooth, apply a delicate layer and leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask gives the benefits of anti aging properties and helps the production of collagen.

  1. Nourishing Mask

Combine one mashed ripe peeled banana, ¼ cup of sugar and ¼ cup of salt. These ingredients should form a paste. Gently massage the paste into your skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask not only exfoliates your skin but also nourishes your skin. (This mask could also be used as a scrub, just don’t leave it on.)

  1. Soft Skin Mask

Combine one egg, a tablespoon of warm (not hot) honey, and a teaspoon of olive oil. Massage the mixture into your skin and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

This mask is great for dry skin and will leave your skin feeling soft.

  1. Skin Revive Mask

Combine ½ a cucumber and a tablespoon of yogurt. You’ll need to use a blender to combine these ingredients. Smooth the mixture into your skin and leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask softens, moisturizes, lifts, and brightens your skin.

  1. Sensitive Skin Mask

Combine 2 tablespoons of finely grounded oatmeal, a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of buttermilk or yogurt. Massage the mixture into your skin and leave on for 15-30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask is gentle on your skin and is very moisturizing.

  1. Hydrating Mask

Combine ½ a mashed ripe avocado, 1 teaspoon of plain organic yogurt, 2 teaspoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of honey. Apply the paste to your face and leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask hydrates, softens and smoothes your skin.

  1. Pore Tightening Mask

Combine one egg white, 1 teaspoon of orange juice, and ½ a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Be careful, because turmeric powder can stain. Apply to your face, leave on for 15 minutes until it dries, then rinse off with warm water. This mask tightens pores and gets rid of acne causing bacteria.

  1. Calming Mask

Warm 2 tablespoons of honey in the microwave for a few seconds then combine 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and the juice of a wedge of fresh lemon. Gently massage the mixture into your skin and leave on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask gets rid of excess oil, exfoliates and minimizes the appearance of dark spots.

  1. Blemish Fighting Mask

Combine 2 tablespoons of honey, 2 tablespoons of nutmeg, and 2 tablespoons of milk. Apply this to your face and leave on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This mask is great for acne prone and sensitive skin.
