Jayne Rand of Swindon has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after a three year stint as a designer bag thief. The 43 year old, mother of two maintained a three yearlong bag burglar career and was able to swipe a whopping total of 904 bags selling them on the website eBay before being apprehended and going for her 905th conquest. Rand had a simplistic approach of swindling many stores around the country including House of Fraser, Debenhams, and John Lewis by walking into the store sans purse, choosing a bag inside the store, and walking out as if the purse was in fact hers. She stole £135,000 of merchandise including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Mulberry, and Burberry making close to £90,000 in support of her lavish lifestyle. Rand was finally caught at a House of Fraser shop when employees found her behavior to be suspicious. The judge presiding over the case, Judge Rhys Rowlands, put this incredibly unbelievable case in perspective: “How you got away with it for so long without being caught was deeply remarkable. You showed professionalism and that is why you went undetected for so long. You traveled the country with the sole purpose of theft and you made a successful, albeit dishonest business of selling stolen handbags. It’s sad and unusual to see a woman of 48 with previous good character up before the court for such a protracted and serious dishonesty.” It is said that Rand has little remorse for her swiping spree.
