Have you ever just taken a chance and followed your dream(s)? Lindsey A. Walker, Publicist, Brand Liaison and Visibility Coach and owner of PR Mentality, an Atlanta based boutique Public Relations firm, did just that. Funny thing is, Lindsey didn’t always know that she wanted to have a career in Public Relations. After discovering a love for writing in high school, she actually wanted to become a journalist; but a fateful opportunity to participate in a Minority Journalism Workshop changed her course in life. A Public Relations class was included in the workshop and it was there that Lindsey learned how to develop a press release, write a media advisory and how to conduct a press conference. She describes how she was hooked after that, so much so that she majored in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations.
When asked when she knew it was time to step out in faith and start her own business, Lindsey cites a time when unemployed and unable to secure employment as the catalyst. “I had been freelancing for a while and had a few clients, so I just decided to go for it,” she says. And go for it she did, at the young age of 21. The transition from freelancing to business owner wasn’t easy at first. There were various business and branding processes that had to be accomplished which included obtaining a business license, logo creation, attracting more clients, hiring of staff and developing a solid marketing strategy/plan.
The mission of PR Mentality is to empower, encourage and educate entrepreneurs that there is value in their product or service and that people would care about their offerings if they knew that they existed. Lindsey adds, “We were created to execute the vision of brands in all industries by delivering innovative public relations services.” One of the most rewarding things about her job is she loves seeing her clients grow. “It makes me proud to see them in the media; whether it’s television, in a magazine or online,” she says. “It makes me smile, knowing that through exposure, their vision is coming to life.”
Although there are many challenges that come with starting one’s own business, Lindsey advises anyone who is contemplating taking a leap of faith, “There is no time like the present!” as for those who aren’t quite sure how to go about it, her advice would be to let your faith guide you every step of the way. Make sure you know everything there is to know about your target industry, how to get started and how to sustain your business. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. “Let your light shine,” she adds.
Future plans for PR Mentality include taking the firm international. Currently the firm represents clients in its hometown of Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Canada. As they expand into the beauty and fashion industries Lindsey envisions working with brands in the UK and Spain. In addition, one of Lindsey’s dream clients with whom she would love to work with is R&B artist Jazmine Sullivan. When asked why she responded, “She’s extremely talented and has an awesome voice. I feel she deserves way more recognition and credit than she is getting right now; I mean, have you listened to In Love with another Man? Timeless.”
Interested in becoming a client of PR Mentality? According to Lindsey you must have an amazing product or service that has launched or is in the process of being launched. You must be passionate about your brand and willing to put in the necessary work and investment. The firm offers a variety of services including copywriting, press releases, media kits, sponsorship packages, consultations and branding strategy services.
