MBIFW FROM A FASHION DESIGNERS PERSPECTIVE

by

By special guest contributor Suzette Kelly (Sarahi House of Fashion)

Miami Beach International Fashion Week (MBIFW) was very much about fashion and truly international.  Of course it would not have been MBIFW if it had not start off with Miami signature looks, swimsuits.  Featuring swimsuit designers such as Eugene Jones Swimwear-USA, Kanomi Swimwear -Venezuela, De Lancret Swimwear-USA, Sambarela Swimwear-Brazil and MaddSexy Lingerie-USA.

Over the four day long event I had the pleasure of touring the world through the eyes of fashion.  I visited France on my first night with the French and Burlesque theme, music and style.  This showcase supported women and children in need.  Designers participating were Baby, Erin Healy, Arefeh Mansouri, Zula Khramov, Art of Shade and Cesar Rosario.  Along side some of Miami’s top designers Julian Chang, Petit Pois by Viviana G., Samy Gitcherman and Nicolas Felizola.

My second night I found myself in Jamaica to start with.  The Jamaica Showcase were designer brands like POSHE by Camesha Powell, Julan by Juliette Dyke, Jamaican Collective and featuring finalists from Jamaica’s Mission Catwalk Designers Challenge Shenna Carby Ayanna Dixon.  I was transitioned to the island of Jamaica with the collections on display as they truly emulated the island culture and style.

Can we say couture! I did not stay in Jamaica too long- it was on to the middle east as I began to tour the world of couture.  It was nonstop couture action with the international Evening wear Showcase.  On deck were were designers Rocky Gathercole-Dubai, Franco Montoro-Venezuela, Patuna Bushyhead-Republic of Georgia, Damaris Rubio-Dominican Republic, Baron Levon Siamanto-USA.  For this showcase I felt like I died and went to couture heaven.

Day three I was still in international waters making my way back to the USA.  We stopped in Russia, Bosnia, Argentina, to name a few before we finally landed.  The Pret-A-Porter Style Showcase feature Eccentric Apparel-USA, LUXXE Collections-USA, Boston Proper USA, Mariela Allaix-Argentina, Marina Makaron Moscow-Russia and Bata Spasojevic, winner of the MBIFW designer competition at Bana Luka Fashion Fair in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On my journey, Copa Airlines took me to South American for their showcase! This showcase featured collections from Claudia Bertolero-Peru, Frederico Visuetti-Panama, Marcelo Quadros-Brazil Eduardo Gonzalez-Colombia, Giovanni Scutaro-Venezuela.

I continued my South American tour with some Latin flavor as I headed to the Latin Fashion Councils Showcase featuring Blue Island by Madelaine Morel-Dominican Republic, Paulina Anda-Ecuador, Ana Carolina Valencia-Colombia, Paulina Bedoya-Ecuador.

Finally, I landed back in the USA for my most memorable showcase as the children took the runway.  Yes, they start young America’s Next Top Model in the making as this little girl captured the hearts of the audience and the cameras.

To close the week out on my fourth night, designers were awarded awards for their hard work on each division, couture, swimsuit, jewelry, etc.  As one fashion week came to an end I cannot wait to see where my journey will take me for the 2012 Miami Beach International Fashion Week.
