Winter can be harsh on your hair, and hair is important to everyone (although sometimes it can be hard to manage). But as we experiment with it and learn new things about our hair it can become easier to find a routine that suits us. Here are some tips and tricks that can be helpful for natural hair.

1.) Routines

Having a regular washing and conditioning routine is the best thing to do for your hair because the products you use build up in your hair and can cause damage to it.

2.) Washing Your Hair

When you wash your hair make sure to rinse it with warm water because cool water fails to cleanse your hair and scalp properly.

3.) Deep Conditioning

When deep conditioning your hair, make sure to use an actual deep conditioner and not regular conditioner. Don’t leave in the deep conditioner for longer than 30 minutes. After 30 minutes your hair follicles can become weakened by a conditioner. If you want to enhance your deep conditioning experience wear a plastic cap but don’t exceed 30 minutes.

4.) Drying Your Hair

Instead of using a towel after washing your hair, grab an old t-shirt to minimize frizz and the damage that can be caused by the microfibers in a towel.

5.) For Maximum Stretch

After you wash your hair, detangle your wet hair, blow drying it till it’s damp. Then apply a leave in and section your hair in at least two sections and twist in into buns. Or section it into 8-10 and apply hair bands about one inch apart along the length of the section and allow it to air dry. After it has dried, braid or twist it and let it set overnight.

6.) Hair Butter

The best time to use hair butter (there are many to choose from so find the one best for your hair) is right after washing since butters are heavier than other other types of hair products. And butters are helpful before using a heated styling tool or to lessen damage during twists or braids. You could also use it for taming flyaways but use a light amount.

7.) Leave in Conditioner

Cold or chilled leave in conditioner is very helpful to your hair as it seals your hair’s cuticle after a wash. So you should refrigerate your leave in conditioner.

8.) A Dry Scalp

If you suffer from an itchy scalp, try a mixture of coconut oil, jojoba oil and olive oil.

9.) Your Curls

If you want bigger hair, don’t twist your hair when it’s soaking wet, make sure it’s mostly dry before you style it. But if you want your curls to last longer, twisting while wet is the better option.

10.) Bobby Pins

If you use bobby pins, you can get a better hold if you place your bobby pins in with the wavy side down. Everyone assumes putting that flat side down is best, but that’s not true.
